Doctors aren’t the only ones that let patients know about their medication. In the realm of healthcare, pharmacists can help prescribe medication and dispense information about their use. Hetal Shah, the pharmacy manager at the El Dorado Hill’s Raley's, finds communicating with patients one of the most rewarding parts of her job.
One memorable moment in her career was when she reviewed some of the charts for her patients. Her patients appreciated the extra time that she put into prescribing them medication, and she was able to directly communicate what would be good for them to use.
However, there were many difficulties to Shah’s path to success. Shah studied in India, where she found college to be very quickly paced. She had to learn how to work with different professors and study with other students in order to succeed. Eventually, Shah moved to the U.S., where she had to not only overcome a language barrier but also pass an exam to get her equivalency degree licensure.
For high school students, Shah acknowledges that many students are interested in pursuing computer science. She advises looking into the many fields that connect and overlap with computer fields, such as pharmacy, as technology becomes more pertinent in almost every field today. Additionally, she believes that passion is necessary for any future career, and that if you have passion, the skill will come with experience.
